Sore Gums May Benefit From A Spring Cleaning

With a procedure known as a scaling and root planing, our team can offer a spring cleaning for your smile, one that can reverse inflammation and manage issues like periodontal disease. If you have sore and bleeding gums, then you may benefit from one soon! In today’s blog, Brooklyn Periodontics and Implantology talks about cleaning smiles in Brooklyn, NY!

The Risks of Major Plaque and Tartar Buildup

Various factors could lead to plaque coating your teeth, and this sticky layer will then harden into tartar with time. The buildup may occur due to a diet high in sugar and starch, which feeds harmful buildup-causing bacteria. Lack of proper brushing and flossing could also encourage buildup, as the particles that feed bacteria remain in place. The layers make teeth stains more visible and can weaken outer enamel to increase the risk of decay and infection.

Even more troubling, the same buildup can irritate and inflame the gums to cause periodontal disease, which could lead to tooth loss without treatment. To keep your smile full and healthy, we can offer periodontic care, particularly a deep cleaning known as a scaling and root planing.

The Deep Cleaning Process

If you have sore, red, and bleeding gums, or if you notice recession in your gum tissues, then you may have serious gingivitis or possibly gum disease. If we catch this issue early, then we could offer help with a deep cleaning, sometimes referred to as a periodontal cleaning or a scaling and root planing. The procedure involves first numbing your smile to ensure you are comfortable as we gently and thoroughly remove all plaque and tartar from not only your teeth, but from the roots and under the gums too. This destroys pockets of harmful bacteria in the process.

Our team will use an ultrasonic scaling device to gently and thoroughly remove the layers of plaque and tartar using gentle vibrations. We then follow this with a manual pick for any stubborn portions of tartar. The last step of the process is to polish your teeth, which limits how much buildup can accumulate before you see us again, and also brightens your smile. This process could take one visit or as many as two to four, it all depends on the severity of the overall plaque and tartar buildup.

Managing Your Periodontal Health

To help manage your periodontal health in between these visits, make sure you brush and floss daily, and try to cut back on the sugar and starch in your diet. Avoid tobacco products too!
