What Makes Dental Implants Last?

When you have missing teeth, we can replace your lost teeth with dental implants. With the right steps, you can help them last for years to come! In today’s blog, Brooklyn Periodontics and Implantology talks about making dental implants last in Brooklyn, NY!

Placing Dental Implants

How do we place dental implants? With oral surgery, we can gently insert new posts that act like tooth roots. Made from biocompatible titanium, these will bond with the jaw and provide a new bae to support a new tooth. We will plan and guide the process with advanced digital imaging, such as digital x-rays and CT imaging. In some cases, in the same visit we can complete the new tooth with a custom crown, or attach a prosthetic like a bridge or even a complete set of new teeth to the post, all in one visit. With the right care and attention, they have the potential to last for decades to come, possibly even a lifetime. But how do you keep your new teeth strong?

Keeping Them Strong

To help keep your smile strong and ensure your new teeth last, you need to see us for routine visits if you have periodontal disease, so that we can manage the disease with periodontic care and prevent tooth loss and implant failure. You also need to see your general dentist for routine checkups and cleanings every six months, controlling inflammation and buildup to safeguard your teeth and gums. At home, you need to brush for two minutes in the morning and again at night for at least two minutes. You also need to floss every evening before you go to bed. These actions also help safeguard your teeth, both new and natural. We also suggest cutting back on sugar and starch in your diet, and avoid tobacco products.

Minor and Advanced Tooth Loss

If you have a single missing tooth, then we can replace it with a dental implant, completing it with a custom crown. If you have severe cases, a bridge could be supported with one or two of these posts, so we could use four per arch to secure a complete set of new teeth with the All-On-Four system. Whether you have minor or severe tooth loss, we want to help with implant dentistry, and we want to make sure your new teeth can actually last for years to come!
